A percentage is a way of expressing part of a whole out of 100. It shows up everywhere — sales, taxes, statistics — and comes up often on Secondary 2 exams.
Converting a percentage to a decimal
To convert a percentage to a decimal, divide by 100 (or move the decimal point two places to the left). For example, 45% becomes 0.45.
Finding x% of a number
To find x% of a number, multiply that number by x/100. For example, 30% of 80 is calculated as: 80 × 0.30 = 24.
Calculating a percentage increase or decrease
For an increase of x%, multiply by (1 + x/100). For a decrease of x%, multiply by (1 − x/100). A $50 item with a 20% discount costs 50 × 0.80 = $40.
Example 1 — Finding a percentage
A class has 25 students, 15 of whom are girls. What percentage of the class are girls? We calculate: 15 ÷ 25 = 0.60, so 60%.
Example 2 — A store discount
A sweater costs $60 and is on sale for 25% off. What is the final price? The discount is 60 × 0.25 = $15. The final price is 60 − 15 = $45.
